Tomorrow my full review of this week’s new movie will be posted. For now, here is a little refresher on House At The End of The Street. Here’s the trailer in case you want to catch up before reading on.
The horror movie stars Jennifer Lawrence fresh off of her Hunger Games popularity, which was a main selling point in advertisements for the film. Lawrence portrays 17-year-old Elissa, who, with her mother Sarah, moves to the middle of nowhere for a fresh start. Their rental house seems perfect- it's huge and affordable. The only catch is a heinous double murder took place next door a few years before. Upon first arrival it appears that the house is vacant, but where’s the fun in that? The original murder happened with a crazed daughter killing both of her parents in the middle of the night before disappearing herself. However, the couple’s older son, Ryan, took over the house and lives there by himself, pretty much every single mother’s nightmare. Since this is a movie geared towards a younger crowd, it's pretty obvious that teenage hormones will be raging, and Elissa and Ryan will be spending some alone time. Well, at least thats what Elissa will be thinking; since Ryan appears to have a secret hidden in the basement.
The movie has been marketed with a Twitter campaign using the clever hashtag #HATES, which is created by taking the first letter of the key words in the title. The fact that Jennifer Lawrence’s fame recently skyrocketed thanks to The Hunger Games was also used as a marketing ploy.
There are a few reasons why I am excited for House At The End of The Street. First of all, I have professed my love of horror movies on this blog several times. I’m always down for a good scare, and I’m hoping this movie can live up to my high horror expectations. Secondly, I love Jennifer Lawrence. I was a fan before The Hunger Games and a bigger fan after it. What i’m looking for in this movie is whether Lawrence can live up to all of the hype for her first big screen feature after The Hunger Games. There is added pressure for Lawrence since the movie has been promoted using her name. Although the movie is being led by Lawrence, I am excited to see how Elisabeth Shue and Max Thieriot hold up as Elissa’s mother Sarah and neighbor Ryan. Right now Shue and Thierot may not be as well known as Lawrence, but they both have some impressive work under their belts. Shue has been working steadily since the early eighties and appeared in the second and third Back to the Future films. Recently she has been making her mark on the small screen with a role on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Thieriot has also been working steadily since he made his film debut in 2004. He’s had roles in The Pacifier and Jumper. Hopefully these two lesser known thespians can hold their own against powerhouse Lawrence.
