Coming Up This Week...

For this week’s new release I am once again going to see a horror movie. I know a lot of my new movie reviews have been on horror movies, but I can’t help it. I’m addicted. Anyway, although I am sort of following a pattern going the horror route, I am shaking things up a little. This week I will be venturing into franchise territory. I guess you could say I ventured into the franchise territory a bit with my Child’s Play review, but for that one I reviewed only the first film. This time I’ll be focusing on the fourth chapter- with Paranormal Activity 4. Here’s the trailer for those of you who haven’t seen it, and links to the other three trailers will be at the end of the post.

Now, the last two movies in the series were more of prequels. Well, at least the third one was strictly a prequel, the second film took place a few months before the events of the first and ended just after the events at the end of the first (confusing, I know). The fourth movie is the first sequel that will fast forward, and take place years after the initial story. It also changes course from the other films by primarily focusing on a different family. The first three films focused on sisters Katie and Kristi and their families.

The fourth focuses on a teenage girl named Alex and her family. Alex lives with her parents, who are constantly fighting and appear to be headed for a divorce, and her younger brother Wyatt. Also featured are Alex’s boyfriend Ben, and the family’s new neighbors- which is where the connection comes in. The new neighbors across the street are Katie and her “son” Robbie. Soon enough things start to go weird. Katie ends up in the hospital for some unspecified reason, and there is no one to take care of her little bundle of joy. Alex’s mother, being a good samaritan, agrees to take care of Robbie for however long his mom’s in the hospital. That’s when things get weirder. Robbie is set up to bunk in Wyatt’s room, and in the middle of the night likes to get up and take walks. By himself, at six-years-old. For whatever reason, Alex appears to be the only one who has a problem with the little bugger. As things get weirder and weirder her complaints fall of deaf ears, leaving her family in the middle of a paranormal predicament.

I’m excited to see Paranormal Activity 4 for a few reasons. First of all I’m a fan of the last three, particularly the third. I’m hoping this installment beats out the others to be the best Paranormal Activity movie yet. Also, if you haven’t seen the other movies, they are all filmed in the “found footage” style. Which basically means the characters filmed the events themselves using security camera footage, handheld cameras, or other means. This chapter is going to follow the same path, but it looks as if the producers put a new spin on the idea. From the trailer it appears new forms of technology are going to play a part in the characters filming. I’m interested to see how it works out. Most of all though, I’m excited to be scared. I’m hoping Paranormal Activity 4 will make me jump right out of my seat.

To see if this installment was the best yet, or just another disappointing sequel check out my next post.
